PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
Northwest Extension LRT Project, Phoenix, AZ

Project Description
The Northwest Extension Light Rail Transit Project (NWE Project) was a locally funded Project, paid for by the City of Phoenix. METRO was contracted by the City of Phoenix to manage, administer, operate, and maintain the NWE Project. The Northwest Extension Light Rail Transit Project was a two phase project consisting of a 3.1 mile section (Phase I) and a 1.4 mile section (Phase II). Each a double track alignment. Phase I extends from the Central/Phoenix East Valley LRT Project’s northern extent north on 19th Avenue to Dunlap Avenue, west on Dunlap one block and terminating with a regional park and ride. Phase II continues west on Dunlap and then north on 25th Avenue to a termination point on Mountain View Road; this has been identified as the Locally Preferred Alternative.

Phase I includes three stations, one park and ride, paved trackwork, and three traction power substation sites.  The alignment is primarily center running with the overhead catenary system poles between the tracks.  Phase II includes one station, one park and ride, paved trackwork, one traction power substation, and a reasonably short bridge over a canal on 25th Avenue.
